Artist Statement
I strive to make elegant wheel thrown forms which become a blank canvas for the various low-fire surface treatments I employ; most of which do not involve a glaze.
Some pots are fired in a closed container within the kiln, called a saggar. Sawdust, table salt, copper sulfate, copper wire, and steel wool surround the pots during firing. These materials fume the surface of the work within the controlled atmosphere of the saggar. The resulting pots are "painted by the fire."
My smoke fired pots have geometric patterns of carbon from smoke absorbed into the clay body during the firing process.
The fire is my collaborator, and ultimately in control of the end result. I direct the process, but rely on the random beauty of the fire.
My work is decorative only and should not contain water or food. The surfaces are durable, and can be cleaned with a damp cloth.
