Originally from North Carolina, ceramics artist Cathey DeLisle is a “self- taught, and still learning, sculptor.” Her pieces range from hanging sculptural clay masks, to tabletop horses, to her fragrant candle-filled ceramic bowls. DeLisle creates her one-of-a-kind pieces at Quail Farm Pottery in Buffalo, Missouri.
She comes from a family of wood carvers and painters but found that those mediums did not fit her artistic style. “I would see different artists and think, ‘I've got to create something.’ It was like a frantic need. It was strange; all of a sudden my creativity would not wait on real life anymore. I found clay to be my medium of choice about six years ago. I love creating work that gets a positive response.”
DeLisle lets spontaneity take the lead when it comes to creating art. “I don't weigh or measure anything - the days work is not planned. This makes the work eclectic, usually with an imperfect, organic feel to it. I hand build, throw, extrude and alter clay. I also use a variety of decorating techniques. I am inspired by all that is around me. Animals, nature and people offer an endless variety of subject matter. I enjoy watching my work evolve and my skills improve.”
