Artist Statement

I am a pharmacist and art is my narcotic. My early years were formed in the Cajun culture of southern Louisiana. My grandfather and great grandfather were both blacksmiths on the Katy plantation and my father was the first generation to work off of the plantation. This family heritage of hard work and communal life has molded my character and provides inspiration for my work. A longstanding appreciation for two dimensional art, especially the Hudson River School, eventually inspired me to try my hand at oil painting.

In each piece of artwork I see an endless opportunity for exploration of light, form, and emotive description. By creating two dimensional art I am able to discover and describe a sense of time and place imbued with emotion. I can often describe more of what inspires me with a few strokes of the brush than I can with words.

My technique is varied, consisting primarily of those “borrowed” from old and new masters. Observing their work has taught me a better understanding of composition and how the eye sees art. This has resulted in more contrast in my work and a more refined center of interest in some pieces. I am employing more geometrics in my work, lost and found edges, and the play of light across form to add visual interest.
